Project Management

Projects are happening in every organization at all times throughout the year. Whether it’s a relatively simple hardware refresh or something more complicated like implementing a whole new Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system on a tight timeline; projects need management.

One of the defining characteristics of projects is they are a single event, as opposed to an ongoing activity. Projects are scheduled with an ending. Most organizations, especially small businesses, either do not have qualified project managers on staff or simply cannot spare a key employee to manage one, even for a short duration. When it comes to project managers, the good ones are invaluable and can add significantly to the bottom line, while the bad ones can put you out of business.

Project managers juggle many issues and wear many hats.
An abbreviated list of duties includes:

Planning

including defining project scope and developing a project schedule

Organization

identifying roles and responsibilities and staffing

Leadership

setting team direction, coordinating activities and motivating project members

Controlling

measuring, evaluating and correcting if required

Project Implementation

This is where things get real.  Project Implementation is the phase where plans are translated into actions.  While it is nearly impossible to have a successful implementation without a foolproof logistics plan, implementation goes deeper than just getting the right part to the right place at the right time. It takes considerable coordination amongst the various project stakeholders to get this right, the first time.  Implementation slices across all disciplines within an organization; from the senior leadership to the newest team member.

Everyone needs to be in alignment.  Customers need proper notification if normal operations are altered and vendors need to know if there is any disruption in delivery.  IT must consider compatibility, obsolescence, security and risk management while HR needs to understand training requirements and potential impacts to corporate culture.

Project implementation is the execution of the project plan.  It is where an organization, after months of deliberation and consideration makes the leap.  Sometimes there is a reversion option, often there isn’t.

Project implementation can be a game changer.
